Some questions.

1) When water is heated, it starts to boil. Just before it starts bubbling, there is a low hissing noise which increases and slowly another harsher noise takes over.(like the vessel is being hit and scratched). The sounds lessen a lot as soonas the water starts actually boilng.
Why do these sounds occur?

If anyone has any interesting questions from mathematics, physics or chemistry, please put them up here.
Thank you.

Wasn't question 1 just common sense? I thought it was a trick question or something so I didn't answer.

I don't see what was so common sense about that. I have never heard of bubbles making such a sound when a pop.

That site is super-cool! Lot of interesting stuff to puzzle on.

I love you guys!

I just spent the last hour looking for the link to straightdope. I was reading the site for hours yesterday and forgot to bookmark it, and then cleared out all my history/etc with CCleaner by accident. I just searcehd all the forums I visit, every website, and couldn't find anything. Decided to look through my cookies, and then realized I forgot to check cpp-home.

Awesome, very cool thing about the water too.
