recording problem

hi,
when i try to record something with my mike, nothing happens. however, sometimes when i play some audio on the computer and start the recording software, it records that (even if the speakers are not on), althought this happens only sometimes. so, basically my mike is not working. i might have changed some setting by mistake. could someone help me with this please? thanx a lot.

It's possible your only set to record from a single source at a time.
Bring up the mixer (double click the speaker icon)
go to options->properties.
Select recording and hit OK.
Make sure that the checkbox under microphone is selected.
