unmovable file

Postby ktoto » Tue Mar 23, 2004 2:28 am

i suffering from this problem for long time :cry:
the problem is with

cannot move "somefile.avi": it is being used byanother person or program

error which comes out every time i'm trying to delete or move movie file
nothing helps like restarting explorer.exe and etc.

it happens only with video files and not with everyone of them
sometimes i can delete/move file with no problem and sometimes even restarting windows doesn't help :(

i did search on the web and this problem seems to be common but until now i didn't find any normal solution or explanation.

is it some kind of bug?

maybe anyone knows what's the problem?

Have you tried booting up in safe mode and moving/deleting?
C++ I can grok but coming up with a decent signature is beyond me

If your uploading the file then it's in use by WinMX(or whatever your using), it's rood to cancel someone's download but :wink: if you need to get read of prawn....

I'm asuming you have it starting on startup too, else you would be able to on a reboot. This explains why it's "sometimes," because sometimes someone wants it, other times nobody does.

maybe safe mode will help but this is not a solution
i can't, every time i want to delete or move file, restart in safe mode
and i'm not sharing the file

i came back to home now and tried to move file once again
and this time succeded...
it seems like if enough time passes then moving works

another thing i noticed that if i drag the file to another folder -
it doesn't works almost never
but if i do first copy and then paste on target folder - it works :roll:
and in some cases nothing helps and the only solution seems to be just wait :roll:

I had the same problem (it's common).

To fix it, I used this inf file:
; Windows XP explorer movie fix.
;
; WARNING - Use this file at your own risk.
;
; Executing this file will remove a registry key which makes explorer load shmedia.dll.
; Simply put, this removes the annoying "permission denied" errors when trying to
; move/copy/delete AVI files.
;
; To use this fix, right-click on the file and select install. Done.
;
; Information about the registry key from multiple sources.
; Inf-file compiled by Moo (2002-03-22).
; Idea by Duxus. Thanks to the kind people of "[BBB] Sweden #01", you know who you are! :-)
;

[version]
signature="$Windows NT$"

[DefaultInstall]
DelReg = Reduce.Reg

[Reduce.Reg]
HKLM, "SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32"

Just past in notpad or something, save and rename to xxx.inf and then rightclick and install.

Aternativly you could do it manually:
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

I take no responsebility :wink:

I used to have this problem. It was because it was loading a mini sample into the side bar, so the file was open. I don't know why it suddenly started behaving (I can now delete just fine, regardless of sample window) but I used to just create an empty txt file, and select and delete them both at the same time. It doesn't show a sample when there's two or more selected.
